President's Message

"Remember Your Roots", a theme that is fitting for the 153rd consecutive Arran-Tara Fall Fair. The first thing that comes to mind is the root every plant has. There are two tasks of the roots; firstly supplying the plant with water and nutrients, and secondly to keep the plant standing. Think of the large roots that Maple or Oak or Beach trees have and how different this is for smaller plants like grass or garden crops. Than we have root crops which are carrots, red beets, grown mostly for human consumption. Mangel(s) (beets) and sugar beets belong to the same plant family. Mangels were grown for livestock feed years ago. Sugar beets like the name says are grown for its sugar content 16-19%. Beet sugar is a little coarser than sugar extracted out of (sugar) cane, a plant grown in much water climates. Back to our theme, carrots and red beets are locally grown in gardens in Tara and Arran Township and exhibited at our Fall Fair. Their much larger cousins; the mangels, sugar beets and turnips are another agriculture root crop of our past. To the best of my knowledge turnips do not belong to the same plant family as sugar beets and mangels. Grown on our local farms and shown at our Fair, these crops will make a return this year. Much different is the understanding of our own family roots. Some of us are 4th or more generations Canadian or may have native ancestors. Others are much more recent immigrants – if you like to share your family genealogy please contact Bruce Miller or myself, we will have a display at our Fair this year. The 2nd week in September will be busy. Sunday we will have our combined church service and 4 local churches on the arena floor. The fair set-up will take place two days before the fair. Tuesday morning all exhibits for home craft and Agriculture have to be brought in. Judging in the afternoon. Hall opens for the public at 6 pm and lawnmower races are planned for that night. Like always, the official opening will take place after the parade at the grandstand. There are almost too many things going on that day to name, 4-H shows, horse shows of different kinds right from miniature to some of the very large breeds, goats, poultry, and sheep. Come see for yourself! I get excited just writing about it. Let’s celebrate our heritage on Sunday, Sept. 12th at the Ecumenical service and Tuesday, Sept. 14th and Wednesday, Sept. 15th at the Arran-Tara Fair.

In your service, Simon De Boer,
President
