Annual Fall Event
Saturday, September 25, 2010
Ayton Centennial Hall, 818 Albert St. Ayton, ON.
Celebrating 40 years!
Stephen S. Barthel
Stephen Barthel was accredited in German research in 1981. His insatiable interest in genealogy led to a career of twenty-one years, working for the largest genealogical repository in the world, the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. He worked as a reference consultant for Central European, Eastern European and International research. For five of thse years it was his privilege to work in the VIP Unit of the Family History Library, not only hosting VIPS, but doing research for such notables as Presidents Clinton and Bush, President Rau of Germany, The Queen of Sweden, Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, Barbara Walters, Walter Cronkite, several United States senators and governors, and many other high profile individuals. He is now serving as a director on the board of the St. Michael, Minnesota Historical Society. He currently works as an archivist/genealogist at the Stearns History Museum in St. Cloud. He has published more than two dozen family history books, including an online gazetteer of localities in East and West Prussia and is currently preparing a couple of major genealogical databases for a seachable CD. Stephen resides with his wife and two sons in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
8:30- 9:00: Registration, Visit Vendor Tables, Submit questions for Panel.
9:00 - 9:15: Welcome and Opening Remarks
9:15 -10:15: Breaking the Sound Barrier: Working with Phonetics: Research is full of obstacles. Given names, surnames, and locatlity spellings are often written phonetically, each creating a barrier to research. Follow the step-by-step twists of methodology, using German/Polish examples in overcoming the phonetics issue.
10:15 - 10:30: Break, Visit Vendors Tables
10:30 - 11:45: Passenger Lists, Police Records and Unreadable Localities: Passenger lists are tools generally used to find an ancestral place of origin in Germany or Poland. However the locality is often written illegibly. Follow a step-by-step example using a combination of other online sources and methods to circumvent the problem. Traditional instruction using U. S. passenger lists, the Hamburg 'police' records, as well as the Klluber collection will also be presented.
11:30- 12:00: Annual Meeting & Presentation of Ken Young and Betty Wilson Family Awards.
12:00 - 1:00: Hot Lunch - Visit Vendors tables
1:00 - 2:00 The Gazetteer Goldmine: Finding Localities in Germany/Poland: Most villages in Europe were too smaill to have a church. Records are cataloged by the Family History Library under the name of the locality that originally kept the records, which is usually a church locality. Gazetteers take the guesswork out of using maps alone to find ancestral records. Learn to easily locate records for any given village, using maps and gazetteers.
2:00 - 2:15: Break, Visit Vendors Tables
2:15 - 3:15: Maryanne Cunningham: "Family History in Song." She will sing a group of songs she wrote to tell her ancestors story.
While in Bruce and Grey counties, come early and visit the Bruce County Cultural Centre & Archives and Grey Roots. See what they have to offer you as a Bruce and Grey County researcher. There will be two free days of research to Fall Event participants on Thursday, September 23, and Friday, September 24. You must pre-register to take advantage of this offer.
