Echoes of Ancient Egypt
Exhibition of Contemporary Art & Culture

King's University College, Elizabeth A. "Bessie" Labatt Hall

The Centre for Creativity is pleased to offer this unique presentation featuring photography from Langaki (circa 1900) whose work is collected in the archives of the Royal Geographical Society. London visual artists Ron Benner and Jamelie Hassan will exhibit their art along with selected work from the collections of Daniel Kolos, Patrick Carstens and Penn Kemp. Keynote speaker Gayle Gibson, Educational Director, Royal Ontario Museum and President of the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities will explore the influences of Egypt on contemporary art and culture. The programme will include original poetry and commentary by art collector and Egyptologist Daniel Kolos and Suite Ancient Egypt written by sound poet Penn Kemp and performed with Toronto keyboard artist Bill Gilliam. A performance by the Meira Tribal Dancers will follow.

Curator of the exhibition is Dr. Gloria Alvernaz Mulcahy.

Daniel Kolos says that our Centre for Creativity’s "Echoes of Ancient Egypt" ". . . exhibit will shed light on the imitative creativity inspired by ancient Egypt that many of us carry either consciously or unconsciously . . . . Southern Ontario is as well represented as any part of the world in modern creativity that is influenced by ancient Egypt from handicrafts, paintings, poetry, jewelry, architecture to industrial design goods." (Kolos, 2005).

Free admission; reception with Middle East sweets to follow; students and public welcome (wheelchair accessible).
