Last but not least ...

I know you've been waiting for it.  My book pick!  I'm going to sneak in two this newsletter.

For lovers of fiction, I recommend Carla Gunn's Amphibian, a delightful, yet cautionary tale narrated by nine year old Phineas Walsh who is passionately concerned about the state of the environment.  It is funny, sometimes scary and very informative.  If you enjoyed Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, you will love this.  I think it may be even better.

Because this is the month of writing workshops at the bookstore, I'd also encourage all the scribblers out there to have a look at Betsy Lerner's (poet, editor and literary agent) recently updated, The Forest for the Trees. Lots of practical tips about the market and encouraging words to keep you at your desk.  A great addition to any writer's library.

April 21-22-23

THE CLIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING

What better place to celebrate the wonder of change, than with our seniors? April is National Poetry Month and this year’s theme is Climate Change. Join poets Dawna Proudman and Caroline Menzies as they celebrate poetry at seniors residences. Everyone of all ages is welcome to these events which are generously funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and the League of Canadian Poets.

Wednesday, April 21, 7:15 pm, Shelburne Residence, 200 Robert St., Shelburne

Thursday, April 22, 3 pm, Maple Court Villa, 5 Fourth St., Walkerton

Friday, April 23, 2 pm, Central Place, 855 3rd. Ave. E., Owen Sound

Performing original poems that take the temperature of our current times and climate, Caroline and Dawna’s poems honour our past, our present, and the power and upheaval brought about by change and transition.

To round things out, Dawna will also present a few poems by well known poets from various cultures and eras (P.K. Page, Rumi, Maya Angelou, Pablo Neruda), honouring the tremendous range of styles, and forms which poetry can embrace.

Both poets are strong performers, juggling words with wit, intelligence and emotion, in order to reveal surprising illusions and even more surprising truths.

Short Bio: Caroline Menzies

Caroline Menzies has performed solo and as part of The Drift (a poetry trio with percussive sound effects) in and around Grey Bruce at coffee houses, literary parties and such venues in 2009 as Summerfolk, The Owen Sound Busker Festival Showcase, and Bruce Power Beach Party. She is a member of the Grey Bruce Poetry Slam Team and has performed in Slams as part of Words Aloud in Owen Sound and Durham. She was Poet of the Month in August 2008 in The Owen Sound Sun Times, has had short stories published in Lighten Up, Eh! (Brucedale Press) and in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine (Sept. 2007). She also reports the news online for www.digitaljournal.com. She has published two chapbooks of her poetry, "Walking in Sky" (Pipedown Press 2008) and "Miss Touchy and Other Poems" (Pipedown Press 2009), and has written a novel, When Echoes Rise (unpublished). Caroline is the Artistic Director of SOUNDS, Words and Music Series, a monthly poetry and music event in Owen Sound. She also has a "real job" as manager of the Owen Sound Artists' Co-op.

Short Bio: Dawna Proudman

Dawna is a member of the League of Canadian Poets, co-founder of the Words Aloud Spoken Word Festival, and founder of the Highway Four Writers’ Group. She has performed her poetry on various stages to audiences of all ages, throughout Ontario and Quebec.

In addition to writing and performing poetry, Dawna has written scripts for stage and video, magazine articles, short stories, children’s stories and a novella, which was a runner up in Malahat Review’s Novella Contest. Her first collection of poems, Elements of Grace, was published by Brucedale Press (2005). She is the editor of Strong in My Skin and Saugeen Stories, also for Brucedale Press.

As the facilitator of "Just Write!" workshops for adults and "Creative Pursuits" workshops for children, she has worked with groups of 3 to 300 to stimulate and encourage word play and the joy of self-expression since 1993. In 1999, Dawna facilitated an eight week group for teenage girls co-ordinated by the Children’s Aid Society, culminating in the production of a booklet entitled Shattered Reflections.

A student and practitioner of Aboriginal medicine and Transformative Mindfullness and Meditation, Dawna has a B.A. from the University of Waterloo.

        7.  Addictions of a Poet Laureate

The Downtown Bookstore is proud to host the launch of the collection of poems, Addictions of a Poet Laureate, written during Elizabeth Zetlin’s tenure.

Zetlin has been likened to Lorna Crozier and Mary Oliver and is the author of two previous volumes of poetry Taking Root and Thing With Feathers and has been a featured poet in a number of anthologies.  She is also a tour de force locally “poem-ing” people on the street and in the work place during the annual national “Random Acts of Poetry.”

Zetlin is a poet with the zeal of a missionary, committed to putting, as she says, “poems and poetry books into people's hands - people who would normally not read a poem. Why poetry? Because it's the song of our species and right now, many songbirds are threatened, if not endangered."

Addictions of a Poet Laureate retails for $10.00.  If you wish to reserve a copy in advance please call The Downtown Bookstore at 519 372 9760.

        8.  Poet Laureate Map of Canada

MEDIA RELEASE - date: October 1, 2008

Library Launches Poet Laureate Map of Canada

The Poet Laureate Map of Canada (www.poetrymap.ca) is unique to Canada, and the world!  There are literary maps and poet maps, but we haven’t yet found a poet laureate map. Our map features a photo, bio and poem from Canada’s poets laureate, past and present, as well as links, and when available, audio and video files. Quotes, FAQs, and news about poets laureate and poetry also make this site a valuable resource.

A legacy project of Owen Sound’s first Poet Laureate, Liz Zetlin, the web-based Poet Laureate Map of Canada showcases Canada’s poets laureate, municipal, provincial and federal, and provides models for communities that want to create their own poet laureate position.

Liz Zetlin and Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners invited poets laureate and mayors of their host-municipalities to participate.  Response has been overwhelming, with nearly 30 poets laureate and 14 host communities listed on the Map.

We thank all those who have worked to make the Poet Laureate Map of Canada come to be a reality, and gratefully acknowledge the City of Owen Sound for funding this initiative. We invite all who view it, use it and learn from it to help the Library improve and update the Poet Laureate Map of Canada.  We also invite you to add a link from your website to the map. Your comments are welcome at: library@owensound.library.on.ca

The map is being launched to coincide with National Random Acts of Poetry Week, October 1 to 5. For the past four years, Liz Zetlin has performed random acts in the Owen Sound area, raising the profile of poetry in her community.

The Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library is pleased to host this poetry map.  We hope that, through the Poet Laureate Map of Canada, poetry continues to take root not only in our homes and hearts, libraries and schools, but begins to flourish in the council chambers and board rooms of the nation.

4.17 - Sun Times, Owen Sound

Trolling for fiction, memoirs, histories...

The Sun Times accepts prose fiction for publication in print and on our web site. We will consider stories in any genre or sub genre - family drama, comedy, satire, science fiction, mystery, adventure or romance. Stories by local authors and treating local places and themes will receive special consideration. We also welcome memoirs, personal histories, family histories, local histories and serialized novellas or novels.

No first drafts. Please submit only finished work that you believe is ready for publication. Send electronic versions only to editor Michael Den Tandt at mdentandt@thesuntimes.ca., or save the work in Word format to a compact disc and drop it off at our 9th Street E. office in Owen Sound, to the editor’s attention. Please be sure to provide your address and telephone number.

If you write on an old Underwood or longhand and have no internet access, please ask a friend to transcribe your work, or a portion of it, and submit it on your behalf. Or we can put you in touch with a transcriber who will type your story into a computer for a reasonable fee. Only writers whose work has been selected for possible publication will be contacted.

If you have queries, please call Michael Den Tandt at (519) 376-2250, ext. 200.

Sun Times Adds Poetry Web Page

Poetry has its own monthly page in The Sun Times.

Now we're giving poetry prominence on our web page. Check out the new Grey-Bruce Poetry Project, under arts/life at www.owensoundsuntimes.com

In conjunction with Liz Zetlin, Owen Sound's poet laureate, we've been profiling a regional poet once a month in the newspaper, including samples of their writing and in some cases videos of the poets reading.

Owen Sound poet Melanie Knapp is featured today on page A5. You can see a video of her reading on the site under news video.

The Grey-Bruce Poetry Project brings together all our previous poets of the month in a new forum.

We'll update the page monthly and we encourage readers to share their own poems through the interactive URGreyBruce side of our website.

                                                - from the Sun Times, July 21, 2008

Liz Zetlin invites local poets “to share their poetry and to enjoy the many voices of our community. Take a look at the Sun Times community forum for Grey/Bruce poets.

Submit your poems. Add links to your favorite poetry sites. Load up audio or videos of a poetry reading, or any other poetry-related visions.

Canada’s Parliamentary Poet Laureate John Steffler says, “Poetry is language off the leash, exercising its muscle and intricate skills. . . . It can take us to the limits of our world, into griefs and ecstasies, even out into madness and non-human experiences, if we want it to and it’s in the mood.”

Let’s unleash ourselves.”
