About the Scott Trophy

by
Joan Lounsbury

Competition for The Scott Cup takes place on the last Monday of each month. The winners of N/S and E/W each receive 7 points down to one point for seventh place. Your best 10 out of 12 months count with the highest point total receiving the cup. You must be a member to be eligible.

HISTORY
In the late 80"s the executive of the OSDBC decided that it was time to institute a new trophy. One that would promote an excellence in play and encourage consistent attendance. As part of their discussions they mused about who had been playing the longest. Paul "Cubby" Scott who was on the executive at the time told how bridge had come to his family.

The year was 1924. His brother, Karl, was transferred to a bank in Hamilton. While there he learned auction bridge and on subsequent visits home taught his family. From the start they had a passion for the game. Their father, Joe, was employed by Hydro and worked the night shift. Sister Ollie worked downtown. Mother Bessie was at home. "Cubby" had fond memories of arriving home from school for lunch. Dad would be up and ask if anything much was going on at school. "Cubby" was quick to learn that the best answer was "not much". So "Cubby" at age 10 would miss afternoon classes in exchange for, shall we say, "home schooling" in bridge.

Another sister Beth lived in Detroit and also became an avid bridge player. They participated, taught others, and promoted bridge to anyone who showed the slightest interest. So with his family's love of the game in mind "Cubby" offered to donate what we now know as "The Scott Cup". He commissioned a silversmith in Toronto to craft the trophy and also some keeper cups to cover the first few years. This produced the handsome trophy so sought after now.

The first recipients were Nigel Coe and Bob Armstrong. The year was 1989-1990. The second year it was won by Paul & Audrey Scott. The third year (1991-1992) the recipient was Vijay Chaddah.

P.S. "Cubby" played bridge for over 80 years. Right up to his recent death hel studied daily bridge hands daily and enjoyed the challenge of the best bid, play and defence but above all his very best advice to all of us was to  "JUST HAVE FUN!"
