Minutes of the 2001 Ballantyne Reunion
I have had inquiries from Ballantynes who are interested but apparently
not related to our particular branch of the family. Therefore, I
am including here a short history of who we are. I
will (with permission) give their email addresses so that anyone interested
in contacting other Ballantynes can do so.
The Ballantyne Family (mini-history)
William Ballantyne was born in 1809 in Scotland near Glasgow.
He married Agnes Forest (born 1818 at
Devil's Elbow on the Clyde River in Scotland, in Glasgow) and later
moved to the Isle of Man where
he was a steward on a farm. Their children were:
James b. 1848 m. Miss Ogilvie. They had two children, William, who
died at age 18 and Jemima who married George Kalbfleisch. They had eight
children. James died in 1876 at age 28.
Agnes b. 1850. d. 1909.
Janet married Alexander Strathdee. Note: see the Strathdee Family Tree
for family. Janet died 1934.
*John b. 1853. d. 1941. There is another
name on the tombstone. Jane Ballantyne
died April 1, 1879, age 10 years.
One daughter died crossing the ocean to Canada.
They came to Canada in a sailing ship in 1855 and settled on the east
half of Lot 23 on the 5th Concession of Downie Township (Perth County,
Province of Ontario, Canada). In 1878 they bought Lot 17, Concession 4,
Downie Township which is still in the family name. In 1978. it was declared
a Century Farm. That year the family picnic was held at the farm and more
than one hundred people attended.
William died in 1882 and Agnes died in 1911.
The attached photograph is of John Ballantyne and his family.
John Ballantyne was born October 5th., 1853 in Douglas, Isle of Man,
and came to Canada in 1855. He married Jane Elliot (born October 18, 1862)
on December 22. 1880. Their children are:
