The Sacred Talisman
Of the four great life-forms in Native spirituality, the mineral kingdom is the most ancient. Rocks
and stones were here long before plants, animals, or Man. Man's body is dependent upon essential
inorganic minerals to store energy, and many physical disorders may be due to deficiencies in these
minerals.
One of the most important minerals is quartz. Quartz crystal contains the same chemical
composition as silica, a natural element in the human body which balances the energy field within
the human aura. Quartz crystal was highly regarded by the Indian who respected its special
properties as a transformer and a storer of energy. The Native shaman used stick-like pieces of
quartz as healing wands.
Quartz is believed to aid meditation and assist the user in listening to the inner voice of the
conscience, or Higher-Self. It makes a person receptive to beautiful things by enhancing
appreciation of physical beauty and also of art, music, and poetry. Since it harmonizes with the
heart chakra it helps to alleviate trauma, sorrow, fear, and resentment. It eases burdens and
promotes understanding. It is reputed to promote friendship and to disperse anger and strife.
It is a Healing stone.
Quartz is both a transmitter and receiver of energy, so it should be carried on the person, and
either worn around the neck or carried on the left (spiritual) side of the body to be most effective.
Sauble Beach, sacred among the North American Indian for thousands of years, is located on the
border of the Saugeen First Nation, and its sand is composed almost entirley of quartz - broken
down over the eons - and deposited by the waters of Georgian Bay. It has been hand-gathered and
packaged by a Native seer.
