Capercaillie Pipe Band History
The Boys
The Capercaillie Pipe Band was formed in 1961 as the Bruce County Junior Pipe Band , a competition band, wearing the Bruce County Tartan, which you see in the background of this screen.
The first Pipe Major was Bill McLeod, local character, and all round nice guy (Hi Bill).
In 1994 the name of the band was changed from the Bruce County Pipe Band to the Capercaillie Pipe Band.
A "Capercaillie" is a rare highland pheasant and is rumored to also mean "a big party" in Scots.
In 1997 the band amalgamated with the Walkerton Legion Pipe Band.
Walkerton's band was founded in 1980 by Ron Fleet under the sponsorship of R.C.L. 102.The past Pipe Majors of Walkerton are Peter Pettigrew and Greg Fleet.
The following is a list of Pipe-Majors who have led the band since its beginning in 1961:
Bill McLeod
