John Henry
Mary Ann

  • born about 1777, Germany
  • Helmke family researchers believe that Mary Ann married Johan Englehard Helmke and was his second wife. She is buried amongst the Stiver family at Bethesda Lutheran Cemetery, Markham, Ontario. Her tombstone reads - "Mary, wife of John Helmka, died Feb. 26, 1855 ae 79 y'rs. 4 mo & 27 days. This stone was erected by her two daughters." Johan Englehard Helmke is buried at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery Buttonville, Ontario. His tombstone reads "John T. Helemkey died Nov. 8, 183(?) ae 89 y'rs." Some researchers have felt that Mary Ann might have been a Quantz and not a Stiver but current feelings are that Johan Englehard's first wife may have been a Quantz. There are Quantz buried in St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery but none known to be buried at Bethesda Lutheran Cemetery. If anyone has proof of marriages, I and other researchers of these families would be extremely grateful. Johan Helmke had one child from his first marriage. No wife is listed for Johan on the passenger list.
  • They lived at lot 8 concession 6 of Markham Township. [1]

Peter

  • born about 1778, Germany
  • Peter married Agnes Nancy Spring December 29, 1807. [5]
  • Peter received lot 20 concession 5 by a free grant according to the Ontario Archives Land Record Index.
  • Peter and Agnes are buried at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Buttonville, Ontario. Peter's tombstone reads "Peter Stiver died April 25, 1858 ae 79 years erected by his widow. Agnes tombstone reads "[Agnes Stiver] [died Apr. 1, 1881] [aged] 91 yr's (?) mo's & [15] d's.

Hannah (Annie)

  • born about 1783, Germany
  • Annie married Josiah Hemingway around 1800.[2]
  • Josiah Hemingway is listed on the tombstone of his son Moses and wife Jane Burn. The years given on his tombstone are 1774-1854. Research has determined that the date of death is incorrect. In the 1851/1852 census Hannah is listed as a widow. The estate papers for Benjamin Hemingway, son of Josiah gives his father's date of death in the petition of guardianship as 21 September 1851. In Anna Hemingway's, wife of Josiah, in her declaration that this was the only will, that Josiah had died on 28 September 1851. This was dated 13 October 1851.
  • On information found at the Markham Museum, her date of death was given as 17 February 1859 in Detroit Michigan. There is no documentation for supporting this. She may have gone down there to live with a daughter after Josiah's death. We know from the guardianship papers after the death of her son, Benjamin Hemingway that she remained in the area and payment was made to "Old Mrs. Hemingway" for her dower rights to property.

Henry

  • born about 1784, Germany
  • Henry married Nancy Wagner in 1817 and she died in 1830.
  • After Nancy's death he married Margaret Galbraith on December 11, 1832. [4]

Francis

  • born about 1793, New York State
  • Francis married Elizabeth Lindsay.
  • They lived at lot 20 concession 5. [2]

John Henry

  • born about 1795, Markham Township, York County, Ontario
  • John was the first white child born in Markham Township.
  • When he was six months old he was taken to Niagara to be cared for by an older sister. [3]
  • John fought in the War of 1812. [4]
  • John married Mary Ann Schütze.
  • They lived at lot 13 concession 4. [2]
